Pentecost
Sunday

Jesus said to his disciples:
"Peace be with you. As the Father
sent me, so am I sending you." Then
he breathed on them and said: "Receive the
Holy Spirit." As we celebrate Pentecost in
our homes and our parish communities, there are
two qualities we need to develop - peace and energy.
Peace is Christ's desire for us as we journey
with him and with one another. But peace is not
a passive thing. Rather it is a dynamic way of
life. We are to be his witnesses in the world,
and so he gives us his Holy Spirit so that we
can have the energy we need in order to witness
through love. This love is practised and developed
in marriage and family life. It needs to be extended
to the life of the parish community. Our motto
for this week of Pentecost can be:
"Love as if everything depends on you. Live
as if everything depends on God."
Fr. Johnny Doherty,
C.Ss.R.
The
Paradox
“The paradox of our time in history is that
we have taller buildings, but shorter tempers;
Wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints;
We spend more, but have less; We buy more, but
enjoy it less.
We have bigger houses, but smaller families; More
conveniences, but less time;
We have more degrees, but less sense; More knowledge,
but less judgment;
More experts, but more problems; More medicine,
but less wellness.
We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced
our values. We talk too much, love too seldom,
and hate too often.
We’ve learned how to make a living, but
not a life; We’ve added years to life, but
not life to years.
We’ve been to the moon and back, but have
trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbour.
We’ve conquered outer space, but not inner
space; We’ve cleaned up the air, but polluted
the soul;
We’ve split the atom, but not our prejudice.
We have higher incomes, but lower morals;
We’ve
become long on quantity, but short on quality.
These
are the times of tall men and short character;Steep
profits and shallow relationships.
These
are the times of world peace, but domestic warfare;
More
leisure, but less fun; More kinds of food, but
less nutrition.
These
are the days of two incomes, but more divorce;
Of fancier houses, but broken homes.
It
is a time when there is much in the showroom and
nothing in the stockroom.”

a Columbine student on the second anniversary
of their tragedy (2 Nov 1999)
The Columbine High School massacre occurred
on Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at Columbine High
School in Columbine, an unincorporated area in
Jefferson County, Colorado, United States, near
Denver and Littleton. Two students, Eric Harris
and Dylan Klebold, embarked on a massacre, killing
12 students and a teacher, injured 21 others,
while 3 were injured while attempting to escape,
before committing suicide. It is the fourth-deadliest
school massacre in United States history, after
the 1927 Bath School disaster, 2007 Virginia Tech
massacre and the 1966 University of Texas massacre,
and the deadliest for an American high school.
