Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus said to Philip:
‘Where can we buy some food for these people
to eat?’ In spite of all the riches
of our world, countless people die each year of
starvation. We can feel totally helpless in the
face of this and as a result we ignore it. Generosity
is one of the great virtues of our people over
the generations and is one that we need to practice
in a special way today. But there are other hungers
that we can do even more about and Jesus is calling
on us to attend to these also. One of the greatest
human hungers is for love and affection. This
may be in our own close relationships of marriage
and family life. There is also the hunger in so
many people in our community today for someone
to look out for them. That is a must if we are
to be a true community of faith in the parish.

Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

The
Trouble Tree
I hired a carpenter to help me restore an old
farmhouse. He had just finished a rough first
day on the job: a flat tyre made him lose an hour
of work, the electric saw quit and now his ancient
van refused to start. While I drove him home,
he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he invited
me to meet his family.
As we walked toward the front door, he paused
briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of
the branches with both hands.
When opening the door, he underwent an amazing
transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in
smiles and he hugged his two small children and
gave his wife a kiss.
Afterwards he walked me to the car. We passed
the tree and my curiosity got the better of me.
I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier.
"Oh, that's my trouble tree," he replied.
"I know I can't help having troubles on the
job, but one thing's for sure, troubles don't
belong in the house with my wife and the children.
So I just hang them up on the tree every night
when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them
up again."
"Funny thing is," he smiled, "when
I come out in the morning to pick ‘em up,
there isn't nearly as many as I remember hanging
up the night before."

Questions people ask
Q. I read your answer why the Church is
against pre-marital relations. But is there any
better way of preparing for eventual marriage
than living together to find if the couple are
compatible?
A. You seem to be blind to the fact that
there is a much higher rate of break-up among
couples who cohabited before marriage than among
those who did not. It is very likely that couples
who did not cohabit before marriage had stronger
religious beliefs and developed a spirit of self-sacrifice
in their relationship. These factors are hugely
important in strengthening the bonds of a mature
relationship.
