The Pope’s Intentions for July
General: That all citizens, individually
and in groups, may be enabled to participate actively
in the life and management of the common good.
Missionary: That, aware of their
own missionary duty, all Christians may actively
help all those engaged in the evangelization of
peoples.
Saints of the Day
Friday 29 – St Peter and Paul, Apostles.
Both suffered martyrdom under Nero in Rome, where
their day is marked with great celebration
Questions people
ask
Q. How can I answer my son who
says there is no need to belong to any church,
just follow your own conscience?
A. The problem is that there
are right consciences and wrong consciences. If
individual conscience alone mattered, then why
did Jesus instruct the apostles and send them
out to teach the whole world? Why have any moral
teachers at all? One of the functions of the church
is to instruct our consciences in the light of
God’s revealed truth. If we were all perfect
of course, we would not need a church to guide
us. The church is a home for imperfect people.
Another
Angle - What’s in a name?
Quite a lot if the choices of many parents is
anything to go by. There is a line of thought
that holds that baby names are chosen with a view
to their social and economic advancement. The
ironic thing is that if a name becomes used too
much, then it can become devalued. Currently Jack,
Seán, Conor, Adam & James, while for
females Emma, Sarah, Katie, Amy & Aoife take
the top positions in Ireland. (CSO 2005)
John was the divine non-traditional choice for
Zechariah’s latest addition to the family.
Names can match personalities, and in this case
John is a very ‘strong’ name. As strong
a name as Liviu Librescu, a Romanian, Jewish Holocaust
survivor who became an aeronautics expert in the
USA. He was teaching a class when Cho Seung-Hui
went on the rampage in Virginia Tech College last
April (2007). He got his students, most not of
his faith, to escape out the window, while he,
a man of 76, barricaded the door and then threw
himself in the path of the attacker.
In a culture which so gauchely celebrates those
who ruthlessly kick obstructions out of the way
to get to the top, the example of this man might
encourage others to get in the way of whatever
threatens humanity.
Names are ennobled by the actions of those who
bear them or not. Could we be described as someone
strong in spirit, like the Baptist who gets in
the way of evil in the world and points to Christ.
If so, then whatever name you bear, it is divinely
chosen for you.

John the Baptist
John the
Baptist was a Cousin of Jesus Christ and the son
of Zachary, a priest of the Temple in Jerusalem,
and Elizabeth, a kinswoman of Mary who visited
her. He was probably born at Ain-Karim southwest
of Jerusalem after the Angel Gabriel had told
Zachary that his wife would bear a child even
though she was an old woman.
He lived as a hermit in the desert of Judea until
about A.D. 27. He then began his ministry, preaching
a message of repentance to the people of Jerusalem,
He wore a leather belt and a tunic of camel hair,
living off locusts and wild honey, and. He converted
many, and prepared the way for the coming of Jesus.
Baptized Christ, after which he stepped away and
told his disciples to follow Jesus.
