21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Simon Peter said to Jesus: 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life, and we believe'. We are conscious today of the many people who give up the practice of their faith. This happens for all kinds of reasons but it is always sad especially when it is people whom we love. This puts more responsibility on the shoulders of those of us who stay with Christ to live our faith ever more fully so that people can see him in us and be attracted to him through us. Christ is the very centre of our faith, as the one who teaches full human living. And his way is the way of love. To love God with our whole heart and to love one another as he loves us is the true practice of our faith. We need the Eucharist in order to live that way. As always the places where we live this faith most urgently are in our homes and our parish.

If I Knew…

If I knew it would be the last time that I'd see you fall asleep, I would tuck you in more tightly and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time that I see you walk out the door, I would give you a hug and kiss and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time, I could spare an extra minute or two to stop and say "I love you”, instead of assuming, you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time I would be there to share your day, well I'm sure you'll have so many more, so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow to make up for an oversight, and we always get a second chance to make everything right. There will always be another day to say our “I love you's", and certainly there's another chance to say our "Anything I can do's?"

But just in case I might be wrong, and today is all I get, I'd like to say how much I love you and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, young or old alike, and today may be the last chance you get to hold your loved one tight.

So if you're waiting for tomorrow, why not do it today? For if tomorrow never comes, you'll surely regret the day, that you didn't take that extra time for a smile, a hug, or a kiss and you were too busy to grant someone, what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today, whisper in their ear. Tell them how much you love them and that you'll always hold them dear.

Echoes

Have you ever wanted to share the faith with your children more easily or to know more about our faith to speak with others at work or at home? The Echoes Programme is a Parish Course to help in passing on the faith. It will lead you to appreciate even more the treasures of the faith and will equip you for handing on Christ in his Church to others.

The Echoes Programme consists of a series of eleven sessions on each Wednesday at 8 pm in the Pastoral Centre, Brook Street, Omagh and repeated on each Thursday at 10.30 am. You can choose between the morning and evening session. It will begin on Wednesday 16th September 2009 (or Thursday 17th September). Each session will last for no more than one and a half hours and will focus on a different aspect of passing on the faith. It is sufficient to attend the session and no further study will be required. Light refreshments will also be available. Enrolment forms are available in the Parish Office or at the back of the Church and you are asked to please return them by Wednesday 2nd September 2009.

Questions people ask

Q. How can anyone today take St Paul seriously when he says that the husband is the head of his wife and wives should submit to their husbands in everything?

A. To be fair to Paul read the full passage in Ephesians 3:21-32. Paul makes even greater demands on the husband. ‘Husbands should love their wives just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed himself for her to make her holy.’ In fact, Paul was a pioneer in advocating the equality of male and female because he recognised how Christ Jesus destroyed the inequalities between Jew and Gentile, between slave and free, between male and female, ‘for you are all one in Christ Jesus’ (Gal 3:28).
