Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sunday,
20th June 2010

Jesus
said to his disciples: “If you
lose your life for my sake you will gain it”.
The world in which we live tells us that the most
important thing is to look after ourselves. And
there is some wisdom in this. Jesus tells us to
look after one another and then everyone will
be o.k. There is even more wisdom in this. It
is only when we get caught up with ourselves that
we become unhappy. When we are focused on the
well-being of others we can achieve great happiness.
That is the way of Jesus. We live out this way
of love and self-emptying first of all in the
intimate relationships of marriage and family
life. Our homes should be places of mutual support
and encouragement, places where each person can
truly be at home. The only way this can happen
is when we make it happen. The same is true of
our faith community.

Life's A Piece
Of Cake
Sometimes we wonder, "What did I do to deserve
this", or "Why did God have to do this
to me". Here is a wonderful explanation!
A daughter is telling her Mother how everything
is going wrong, she's failing algebra, her boyfriend
broke up with her and her best friend is moving
away. Meanwhile, her Mother is baking a cake and
asks her daughter if she would like a snack, and
the daughter says, "Absolutely Mom, I love
your cake."
"Here, have some cooking oil," her
Mother offers. "Yuck" says her daughter.
"How about a couple raw eggs?"
"Gross, Mom!" "Would you like
some flour then? Or maybe baking soda?"
"Mom, those are all yucky!" To which
the mother replies: "Yes, all those things
seem bad all by themselves. But when they are
put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully
delicious cake!
God works the same way. Many times we wonder
why He would let us go through such bad and difficult
times. But God knows that when He puts these things
all in His order, they always work for good! We
just have to trust Him and, eventually, they will
all make something wonderful!
God is crazy about you. He sends you flowers
every spring and a sunrise every morning. Whenever
you want to talk, He'll listen. He can live anywhere
in the universe, and He chose your heart. I hope
your day is a "piece of cake!"

Questions people ask
Q. What did Jesus mean in saying ‘Anyone
who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone
who loses his life for my sake will save it’?
A. Here is a very important message for
the people of our time. One of the fundamental
errors of our age is the exaggerated focus on
self-seeking, putting me at the centre of everything.
Jesus regarded self-seeking as a disastrous programme
for life. But self-denial in the service of love
is the sure way to develop our human potential
and reach deep fulfilment in life. It is in giving
that we receive.
