My Lord and my God

Jesus said: “Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.” We are all very familiar today with the idea of peace processes – in Northern Ireland, the Middle East and so on. Jesus needs us to engage in a peace process with one another so that we can be his disciples and true witnesses of his resurrection. We need first of all to put away all weapons of mass destruction like criticism, anger, coldness, selfishness etc. We need to put in place of these the qualities of God’s Spirit, namely love, joy, peace, patience etc. This week we should practice these qualities first of all in our homes as wife and husband, as parents and family. We also need to practice them as we build our parish community to the glory of God.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Once upon a time there was a little old man. His eyes blinked and his hands trembled; when he ate he clattered the silverware distressingly, missed his mouth with the spoon as often as not, and dribbled a bit of food on the tablecloth.

Now he lived with his married son, having nowhere else to live, and his son’s wife was a modern young woman who knew that in-laws should not be tolerated in a woman’s home. “I can’t have this,” she said. “It interferes with a woman’s right to happiness.” So she and her husband took the little old man gently but firmly by the arm and led him to the corner of the kitchen.

There they sat him on a stool and gave him his food, what there was of it, in an earthenware bowl. From then on he always ate in the corner of the kitchen, blinking at the table with wistful eyes.

One day his hands trembled rather more than usual, and the earthenware bowl fell and broke. “If you are a pig," said the daughter-in-law, “you must eat out of a trough.” So they made him a little wooden trough, and he got his meals in that.

These people had a four-year-old son of whom they were very fond. One suppertime the young man noticed his boy playing intently with some bits of wood and asked what he was doing. “I’m making a trough,” he said, smiling up for approval, “to feed you and Mama out of when I get big.”

The man and his wife look at each other for a while and didn’t say anything. Then they cried a little. Then they went to the corner and took the little old man by the arm and led him back to the table. They sat him in a comfortable chair and gave him his food on a plate and from then on nobody ever scolded when he clattered or spilled or broke things.

On Saturday 25th April Bishop Francis Lagan will be with us in the Sacred Heart Church to administer the sacrament of Confirmation to one hundred and fifty-two of our young boys and girls. It is a time when we are asked to pray for our young people, that they may be loyal to the faith we are passing on to them and an occasion when we wish Bishop Lagan a very sincere and warm welcome to Omagh. All parents, children and sponsors attending the Confirmation ceremony are asked to be in their seats by 10.30 am.

Q. Why do the Gospels put such an emphasis on the risen Jesus showing the disciples his hands and feet?

A. The wounds in his hands and side served to remove any doubts as to the identity of Jesus and the reality of his crucifixion. The Lord invited Thomas to touch his wounds and in doing so, Thomas made the highest act of faith by anybody in the Bible. There is a message here for people of all times. The risen Lord showed his wounds to let us know that we can meet him in our wounded condition. Many people have experienced a wonderful development of faith in meeting their wounded Lord through their own wounds of pain, failures or addiction.
