Wednesday 20 – The Irish
Martyrs. Seventeen Irish men and women were put

Blessed Irish Martyrs
• 20 June
Seventeen Irish martyrs, men and women, clerics
and lay, put to death for the Catholic faith between
1579 and 1654 were beatified by Pope John Paul
II in 1992:
Dermot Hurley, Archbishop of Cashel, hanged 20
June, 1584 at Hoggen Green. Conor O’Devany,
Bishop of Down and Connor, hanged, drawn, and
quartered. Patrick O’Loughran, chaplain
to the O’Neill family and Maurice McKenraghty,
chaplain to the earl of Desmond, both hanged.
Also hanged were Dominicans Terence O’Brien
and Peter Higgins, Franciscans John Kearney, Patrick
O’Healy, and Conrad O’Rourke, Augustinian
William Tirry, and a Jesuit lay brother, Dominic
Collins.
Lay people Francis Taylor, mayor of Dublin, and
Margaret Bermingham died of ill treatment; a baker,
Matthew Lambert, and a group of sailors, Robert
Meyler, Edward Cheevers and Patrick Cavanagh were
hanged, drawn, and quartered on 5 July 1581.
Six Catholics of Irish
birth or connection executed for the faith in
England had already been beatified in 1929 and
1987: John Roche (alias Neale), John (Terence)
Carey, Patrick Salmon, John Cornelius (alias John
Conor O’Mahoney), Charles Meehan, Ralph
Corby (Corbington).
Questions people
ask
Q. Why was there such a negative
reaction by many journalists when the Holy Father
spoke about hell?
A. I must admit that I too was
surprised by the vehemence of these articles.
The pope has the responsibility of proclaiming
the teaching of Jesus Christ, and hell is part
of that teaching. In reminding people about hell
the Holy Father was merely doing his duty. The
negative reaction says more about those who wrote
in such wise. Maybe the reality of hell does not
suit their agenda.
Another Angle -
Release and let go
You’ve heard about Irish Alzheimers? It’s
where you forget everything except the grudges.
While in no way making light of the plight of
Alzheimers sufferers and their families, the joke
does have a pithy truth. Despite everything, we
do tend to hold on to negative things emotionally.
How many families are scarred
and divided over an issue or property, occasions
like funerals and weddings becoming sources of
tension in themselves. All of us, if we are truly
honest, have hurt and been hurt in the process.
We can all tend to be like Simon the Pharisee,
a word which means ‘separated one.’
They were so perfect in their own religious observation,
that they feared contact with others would contaminate
them.
Maybe in our churches we need a family reconciliation
day? A safe space and place to say ‘sorry’
to each other. Maybe not as lavish a gesture as
tears, using hair as a drying agent and expensive
perfume but someplace we could say; ‘I know/
feel I have hurt you. I am sorry.’ Similarly,
to know that someone bore you no ill will would
help you feel released. Ultimately we all need
to live in freedom, not in fear or in shadow.
God made you to be a child of the light, not a
prisoner of darkness. Go to Him.

- John Paul II – Theology of the Body
"The Theology of the
Body is a theological time-bomb set to go off
with dramatic consequences ... perhaps in the
twenty-first century."
George Weigel, author of Witness to Hope, on John
Paul II's Theology of the Body
What is the Theology of
the Body?
Is true happiness possible?
Or is it something that we can only hope for,
but never attain? Is there meaning to life? If
so, what is it? Why were we created as male &
female? What exactly is love? What is the purpose
of sexuality? For many people in our culture,
the only 'answers' to these questions are found
on
television shows.
Yet, there is a better
answer, a vision of human love -- one that does
not ask us to "lie to ourselves" or
live in desperation. It is a vision of self-giving
love ... it is Christ's vision.
John Paul II dedicated
the first major teaching project of his pontificate
to sexuality and the dignity of the human person.
He gave this project the working title a “theology
of the body”. He delivered it in 129 short
talks in Rome, between 1979 to 1984.
Because he gave them as catechesis at his Wednesday
audiences, they are not intended as merely his
private thought, but as key teaching for the entire
Church -- for the entire world.
The Theology of the Body (TOB) is Pope John Paul
II's integrated vision of the human person - body
and soul. As he explained, our physical bodies
have a profound meaning and actually reveal to
us the truth of who we are ... and what we were
made for. John Paul II takes us back to the beginning
-- all the way to Genesis, to help us recover
the true meaning of human love, in God's plan
for our lives
today.
