Ascension
of the Lord

‘Now
as he (Jesus) blessed them, he withdrew from them
and was carried up to heaven. They worshipped
him and then went back to Jerusalem full of joy.’
The feast of the Ascension of the Lord is above
all else a feast of hope. Hope has been described
as, not just some vague kind of feeling, but rather
having someone or something worth living for and
dying for. In Christ we have such a person. He
lives in us in our marriage and family relationships
and it is worth putting every effort into making
those the best possible for his sake. He lives
among us in our community and again we need to
do everything in our power to make our parish
the best we possibly can to his glory and for
the good of all. And Christ lives for us in heaven
at the right hand of the Father, assuring us of
our ultimate destiny among the saints. We can
aim to be there!
Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

A
Goodbye Kiss
"My
Dad was a fisherman, and he loved the sea. He
had his own boat, and he worked hard and would
stay out until he caught enough to feed the family.
When the weather was bad he would drive me to
school in an old truck that he used in his fishing
business. That truck was older than he was. It
would wheeze and rattle down the road. You could
hear it coming for miles. As he would drive toward
the school, I would shrink down into the seat
hoping to disappear. Half the time, he would slam
to a stop and the old truck would belch a cloud
of smoke. He would pull right up in front, and
it seemed like everybody would be standing around
and watching. Then he would lean over and give
me a big kiss on the cheek and tell me to be a
good boy. It was so embarrassing for me - I was
twelve years old, and my Dad would lean over and
kiss me good-bye! I remember the day I decided
I was too old for a good-bye kiss. When we got
to the school and came to a stop, he had his usual
big smile. He started to lean toward me, but I
put my hand up and said, 'No, Dad, I'm too old
for a good-bye kiss.' My Dad looked at me for
the longest time, and his eyes started to tear
up. I had never seen him cry. He turned and looked
out the windshield. 'You're right,' he said. 'You
are a big boy....a man. I won't kiss you anymore.’
It wasn't long after that when my Dad went to
sea and never came back. It was a day when most
of the fleet stayed in, but not Dad. He had a
big family to feed. I wish I had been a man that
day. If I had been a man, I would never have told
my Dad I was too old for a good-bye kiss."

May we never get too old to show our love
or to receive
love without embarrassment.

Questions people
ask
Q. What do you think of blessing with
relics of saints? I think it is bordering on superstition.
A. The relic of a saint is either part of the
body of the saint or something such as a piece
of clothing that came in contact with the saint’s
body. Veneration is a sign of respect. Many people
find their trust in God greatly deepened when
they are blessed by a relic which is a reminder
of the grace and power of God shown in some saint’s
life. We recall how often Jesus touched people
or used materials like saliva, water, bread or
fish in a miraculous way. If a healing comes about,
it isn’t the relic that heals, but the power
of God.
