Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus, friend of outcasts

“Whatever you eat, whatever you drink, whatever you do at all, do it for the glory of God.” We often think of faith and religion only in terms of prayer. The extraordinary thing about Jesus and his teaching, as seen in this passage from St. Paul, is that true religion is to be found in the ordinary things of life and true faith is to be lived in daily life. This is especially true in the day-to-day loving that is marriage. Each couple live out their spirituality in the ways they tenderly love one another. And in family life the quality of love is what makes people holy. In our life together in our parish we are called to the spirituality of being a community in which we care for one another. We need prayer as part of it all both to grow in the power to love and to celebrate the goodness of love. It is only through the power of God that we can love as we should.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

"I’ve Learned”

I’ve learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life goes on and it will be better tomorrow.

I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas lights.

I’ve learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you’ll miss them when they’re gone from your life.

I’ve learned that making a “living” is not the same thing as making a “life”

I’ve Learned” (continued - part 2)

I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.

I’ve learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you.

But if you focus on your family, friends, the needs of others, your work and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you.

I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart,
I usually make the right decision.

I’ve learned that even when I have pains, I do not have to be one.

I’ve Learned” (continued - part 3)

I’ve learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone; people love that human touch - holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.

I’ve learned that you should pass this on to someone you care about. I just did.
Sometimes they just need a little something to make them smile.

People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did.
But people will never forget how you made them feel.

Questions people ask

Q. Why did Jesus tell the man he had cured to tell nobody about it? Surely we are called to give public witness to the works of God?

A. This is usually called ‘the messianic secret’. Jesus was well aware that many people at that time expected the Messiah to be a political power inspiring the nation to freedom from Roman domination, but this was not his mission. Secondly, too much excitement about miracles would generate mass hysteria and a celebrity cult which would obscure the teaching he wished to impart: especially his mission to die on our behalf and his message to take up our crosses and follow him.

Special Service for Bereaved Parents

Remember Our Child will hold its annual Service of Remembrance in St Columb’s Cathedral Derry on Sunday 22nd February 2009 at 4pm. This ecumenical service is for parents/families who have lost a child(ren) through any circumstances.

‘Remember Our Child’ is a project in conjunction with Cruse Bereavement Care and is a partnership of child loss self-help groups in Northern Ireland. Some parents will have lost children through miscarriage, stillbirth or illness; others will have faced tragic loss because of accidents or suicide.

The Remembrance Service gives parents and families the opportunity to come together to remember and acknowledge the lives of their children. Parents are invited to bring a flower in memory of their child(ren) to lay beside the Book of Remembrance in which the names of children have been inscribed.

If you would like further information about the service, please contact: Remember Our Child Project Co-ordinator on 028 9079 7975 or email: rememberourchild@cruse.co.uk
