The Body & Blood of Christ

"Take this and eat", Jesus said, "This is my body. This is my blood, the blood of the covenant which is to be poured out for many." What an extraordinary love Christ has for us that led him to give us this wonderful sacrament through which he is our food and drink. And yet we become so used to the knowledge of it that we can even see it as a burden. But we do the same with our love for one another. In marriage and family life many people feel burdened by the demands of love. In parish life we can settle for a minimum. This week is a very special time to renew the sense of awe that should be ours when we think of the extent of God's love for us and the privilege of our love for one another. It is a week to cry out: "My Lord, and my God" and to say again to each other "I love you".

Never Give Up

Years ago in Illinois, a young man with six months schooling to his credit ran for an office in the legislature. As might have been expected he was beaten. Next he entered business but failed in that too, and spent the next seventeen years paying the debts of his worthless business partner. He fell in love with a charming lady and became engaged – and she died. He had a nervous breakdown. He ran for Congress and was defeated. He then tried to obtain an appointment to the U.S. Land Office, but didn’t succeed. He became a candidate for the Vice-Presidency and lost. Two years later he was defeated for Senator. He ran for office once more and was elected. That man was Abraham Lincoln.

It took Winston Churchill three years to get through the eighth grade, because he couldn’t pass English - of all things! Ironically, he was asked many years later to give the commencement address at Oxford University. His now famous speech consisted of only three words:

“Never give up!”

Questions people ask

Q. What did Jesus mean by the blood of the new covenant?

A.
The Bible is a library of two testaments. The Old Testament is about God’s first covenant with his people, a covenant given through Noah, Abraham and Moses. The New Testament is the documentation of the new covenant, inaugurated by Jesus Christ, by which we are raised up as children of God. Before the time of Jesus, people regularly renewed their side of the covenant by offering blood sacrifices. The new covenant was ratified once and for all in the blood of Jesus, shed on Calvary.
