Divine
Mercy Sunday, 11th April 2010
Second
Sunday of Easter

Thomas
said: “Unless I see the holes
that the nails made in his hands and can put my
finger into the holes they made, and unless I
can put my hand into his side, I refuse to believe”.
Thomas has gone down in history with the nickname
Doubting Thomas and is often referred to in relation
to those who are always questioning. And that
is one of his roles, to assure us that questions
and doubts are an important part of true faith.
We can so easily look only for certainty and perfection
and then we will believe and hope and love. Our
call is to believe in the setting of uncertainty,
to hope even though there is insecurity, to love
in spite of a lack of perfection. And there can
be no doubt that all of these are present in our
lives and our Church today. It is often because
we can see the gaping holes in the Body of Christ
left there by so many scandals, or because we
are asked to put our hands into his side opened
by the sins of one another that we find it difficult
to believe. And unfortunately many give up.
Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.
Buzzards, Bats, and Bumblebees
If you put a buzzard in a pen that is 6 feet
by 8 feet and is entirely open at the top, the
bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be
an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard
always begins a flight from the ground with a
run of 10 to 12 feet. Without space to run, as
is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly,
but will remain a prisoner for life in a small
jail with no top.
The ordinary bat that flies around at night,
a remarkably nimble creature in the air, cannot
take off from a level place. If it is placed on
the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle
about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until
it reaches some slight elevation from which it
can throw itself into the air. Then, at once,
it takes off like a flash.
A bumblebee, if dropped into an open tumbler,
will be there until it dies, unless it is taken
out. It never sees the means of escape at the
top, but persists in trying to find some way out
through the sides near the bottom. It will seek
a way where none exists, until it completely destroys
itself.
In many ways, there are lots of people like the
buzzard, the bat, and the bumblebee.
They are struggling about with all
their problems and frustrations, not ever realizing
that the answer is right there "Above"
them.

Questions people ask
Q. In the Gospel of John the Holy Spirit came
on the Apostles on Easter Sunday whereas Luke,
in Acts, says it was on Pentecost, fifty days
later. Which date is correct?
A. First day or fiftieth? Both
days are correct because the Holy Spirit comes
every day. John highlights Easter Day as the beginning
of a new age and mission. The mission of Jesus,
sent by the Father, was completed on Good Friday.
Now the mission of the Church begins ... ‘so
I am sending you’. The Holy Spirit is bestowed
on the Apostles. As Luke emphasises the world-wide
dimension of the mission, he selects Pentecost,
a harvest festival, when people of far-flung lands
and different languages were gathered in Jerusalem.
