The Pope’s
Intentions for June
General: That the Lord may protect sailors
and all those involved in maritime activities.
Missionary: That the Church in
North Africa may bear witness, with its presence
and its action, to God’s love for every
individual and all people.
Saints of the Day
Wednesday 13 – St Anthony
of Padua, a Franciscan who died at the age of
36 in the year 1231. A native of Portugal, he
preached in France and Italy.
Friday 15 – The Sacred
Heart of Jesus. Today’s feast is a solemn
reminder of the immense love of God for us, revealed
in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Saturday 16 – The Immaculate
Heart of Mary. This feast is traditionally celebrated
on the day following that of the Sacred Heart
of Jesus. A day for honouring Mary, mother of
Jesus.
Questions
people ask
Q. In English we call the Eucharist
by the title ‘Mass’. Where does that
title come from and what does it mean?
A. Mass derives from the Latin
words at the end of the ceremony: Ite, missa est.
A literal English translation would be, “Go,
she is sent” (feminine). Who is the she?
It could refer to the offering which has been
sent to God: or the she may stand for the church-community
gathered in worship. At the close of the ceremony
the worshippers are sent out on the mission to
bring the reality of Christ’s presence from
the church to the world outside. As Mass ends,
the mission begins. As Jesus said, ‘Give
them something to eat yourselves.’
Another
Angle - A real presence
In some Egyptian Coptic Orthodox tradition, there
is a custom of families coming to Divine worship
with home-baked unleavened bread. Some of this
is chosen for use in the Divine Liturgy, the remainder
is brought home and let decay untouched- as it
could have been the Body of Christ. It teaches
a reverence for the ordinary things of life.
For every Christian, there is that potential for
greatness or the opposite. We can be the Body
of Christ or not for one another. In the Rite
of the Mass, the words read ‘On the night
he was betrayed, he took bread from the table.’
It doesn’t say ‘the bread’ or
that it was a special type. It was ordinary bread,
as ordinary as our lives. In other words, Jesus
takes ourselves and transforms it to his body
and blood. On this Sunday we celebrate our identity
as Christ’s Body.
And yet the words ‘bored’ and ‘Mass’
come together all too frequently in conversation.
Why is this? Pope Paul VI used to pray this before
every Mass; ‘Lord, grant me the grace to
celebrate this Mass as if it were my first Mass,
my only Mass, and my last Mass.’ Life is
sweeter when we first realize that ill-health
can intrude. Maybe our experience of how short
our lives can be will help us gain wisdom of heart.
Then we may become ‘Corpus Christi’
–the Body of Christ for each other.

Prayer for Pope
John Paul II’s Intercession - Published
by Rome Diocese
The diocese of Rome published the prayer written
to implore favors through the intercession of
the late Pope John Paul II.
In the last phase of the process of beatification,
proof will be required of a miracle attributed
to Karol Wojtyla’s intercession. The process
of beautification will officially begin on 28th
June. Here is the text of the prayer:
O Blessed Trinity, We thank You for having graced
the Church with Pope John Paul II and for allowing
the tenderness of Your fatherly care, the glory
of the cross of Christ, and the splendour of the
Holy Spirit, to shine through him.
Trusting fully in Your infinite mercy and in the
maternal intercession of Mary, he has given us
a living image of Jesus the Good Shepherd, and
has shown us that holiness is the necessary measure
of ordinary Christian life and is the way of achieving
eternal communion with You.
Grant us, by his intercession, and according to
Your will, the graces we implore, hoping that
he will soon be numbered among Your saints. Amen
"Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you
eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His
blood, you have no life in you; he who eats My
flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and
I will raise him up at the last day."
-- John 6:53, 54
