Sixth Sunday of Easter

First Reading : Acts of the Apostles 15: 1-2.22-29
A big issue for the early Church was how much of the Law and traditions of Moses should be imposed on Gentile converts. This reading tells us how the problem was solved.

Second Reading: Apocalypse 21: 10-14, 22-23
We are given a majestic picture of the new Jerusalem, the heavenly Church of the future, when God’s Kingdom will come in all its glory.

Gospel: John 14: 23-29
We hear yet another portion of Jesus’ farewell discourse at the Last Supper. It is dominated by the thought of his imminent departure.

Sixth Sunday of Easter

Jesus said to his disciples: “Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I leave you”. We are very conscious today of all the trouble there is in our world and yet peace is a longing in every heart. As Christians we have a great responsibility to work for peace in every way we can and in every situation where there is war or conflict. However, the peace that is Christ’s gift to us is much more than an absence of war or conflict. His peace, for which we also have a great responsibility, is about spreading joy and happiness in our homes and community. It is about practicing forgiveness so that the past is always left behind us. It is about creating an atmosphere in our homes and community in which each individual can feel at ease and be glad to be there. It is about letting Christ’s presence change us to the extent that, even in the midst of suffering and division, we can be a people who look to the radiant glory of God.

Devotion to Mary, the Mother of God, during the Month of May

The practise of focusing on Mary, the Mother of Jesus, during the month of May dates back about 700 years. May is seen as the beginning of new life and the start of summer which makes this month a logical time for the celebrations of Mary, who as the mother of God brought new life to the world. The recitation of the Rosary, a May Altar and distribution and wearing of the miraculous medal are encouraged as devotion to Mary, especially during the month of May.

The word Rosary means Crown of Roses and the Holy Rosary is considered to be a perfect prayer as we meditate on the Story of Our Salvation by meditating on the Mysteries.

The Joyful Mysteries are said on Mondays and Saturdays, the Sorrowful on Tuesdays and Fridays, the Glorious on Wednesdays and Sundays and the Luminous or Mysteries of Light, which were added by Pope John Paul II in 2002, on Thursdays. The Holy Rosary is recited in the Sacred Heart Church before the 10am and 7.30pm Masses during the week.

The Church celebrates several Marian feasts during May. Pope Benedict XVI will visit Fatima this year to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Fatima on 13th May. The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated on 31st May.

Prayer for Exam Time

Lord God, we earnestly pray to you at this time, when some of us are anxious about exams.
We ask you for your gifts of peace and calm, so that we can do our best.
We ask you for your help during these days, so that we can reap the rewards of our efforts and study over the years.
Help us to be true friends and a real support to others in the weeks ahead.
We give you the gift of our work, so that we can use our talents now and in the future in the service of your people.

Amen
