Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sunday,
4th July 2010

Jesus said to his disciples:
“The harvest is rich but the
labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest
to send labourers into his harvest”.
When we think about our world today we are inclined
to think primarily of the evil that is undoubtedly
there. Jesus’ perception is just the opposite
as he sees the wonderful opportunities that are
all around us. And when we think of labourers
for the harvest we are inclined to think primarily
of priests and religious and we pray for more
vocations. That, of course, is a very important
thing to do. But even more importantly we need
to think of ourselves as the labourers and take
up the challenge to be apostles of Christ in our
everyday lives. We are apostles of Christ through
the generosity of our love in marriage and family
life and in our willingness to build a community
of faith and generosity in our parish. Vocations
to the priesthood and religious life can only
come from generous homes and generous parishes.

We Are All Connected
A mouse looked through the crack
in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open
a package. He was devastated to discover it was
a mousetrap. Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse
proclaimed this warning, "There is a mousetrap
in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!"
The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her
head and said, "Mr. Mouse, I can tell this
is a grave concern to you but it is of no consequence
to me." The mouse turned to the pig and told
him. The pig sympathized but said, "I am
so very sorry, Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing
I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are
in my prayers." The mouse turned to the cow
and said, "There is a mousetrap in the house!"
The cow said, "Wow, Mr. Mouse. I'm sorry
for you, but it's no skin off my nose." So,
the mouse returned to the house, head down and
dejected, to face the farmer's mousetrap... alone.
That very night a sound was heard throughout the
house - the sound of a mousetrap catching its
prey. The farmer's wife rushed to see what was
caught. In the darkness, she did not see it. It
was a venomous snake whose tail was caught in
the trap. The snake bit the farmer's wife. The
farmer rushed her to the hospital. When she returned
home she still had a fever. Everyone knows you
treat a fever with fresh chicken soup so the farmer
took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup's
main ingredient. But his wife's sickness continued.
Friends and neighbours came to sit with her around
the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered
the pig. But, alas, the farmer's wife did not
get well... She died. So many people came for
her funeral that the farmer had the cow slaughtered
to provide enough meat for all of them for the
funeral lunch. And the mouse looked upon it all
from his crack in the wall with great sadness.
So, the next time you hear someone
is facing a problem and you think it doesn't concern
you, remember --- When one of us is threatened,
we are all at risk.

Questions people
ask
Q. How can I answer somebody who claims that the
beast known by the number 666 (Apoc. 13:18) refers
to the Pope’s title as the Vicar of Christ?
A. The Apocalypse
is not a book foretelling future historical people,
although people of every age have fancifully applied
it that way. It was written for Christians of
the First Century AD who were being persecuted
by the Roman Emperor to assure them of God’s
ultimate triumph over evil. Six is one short of
seven, the number of perfection, but near enough
to deceive people for a while. Three sixes represent
the triple invocation of a false god. It is a
coded reference to the worship of the Emperor
as a god.

Words of Wisdom
“If a doctor, lawyer, or dentist had
30 people in his office at one time, all of whom
had different needs, and some of whom didn't want
to be there and were causing trouble, and the
doctor, lawyer, or dentist, without assistance,
had to treat them all with professional excellence
for nine months, then he might have some conception
of the teacher's job.” ~ Donald
