Easter
Sunday 2010

“They
have taken the Lord out of the tomb,”
Mary of Magdala said, “and we don’t
know where they have put him.”
On the first Easter morning there was a sense
of excitement among the disciples but it was mixed
with anxiety and fear. They didn’t know
what was happening but they knew that something
was. As we celebrate our Easter we can know exactly
what has happened. However we can be so familiar
with this wonderful truth that we may have little
if any excitement about it. It was not the soldiers
who took the body of Jesus from the tomb but rather
the power of God. And where God has put Jesus
is into our hearts, our minds, our company with
one another, above us, below us, all around us.
The deepest reality of our lives has been changed
forever by what happened today and Jesus is risen
and living among us in our homes and in our faith
community. We need to attend to him there.
Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Easter
Garden
We are all familiar with and
love the tradition of the crib in our Catholic
faith. In recent years many parishes have introduced
a Lenten Garden which transforms into an Easter
Garden. Our garden here in the Sacred Heart Church
is situated at St Joseph’s side altar. It
began as a little desert to illustrate Luke’s
Gospel (4:1-13) for the first Sunday of Lent,
The Temptations of Jesus. During Lent the garden
continued to capture the theme of each Sunday
Gospel through symbols and gradual growth. So
it became a visible space to help all of us reflect
on the meaning of life and the resurrection through
the miracle of God’s creation. On this Easter
Day, when we look at the Garden we see the full
transformation as it is now fully alive. As we
gaze at the beauty of the garden our eyes are
drawn to look at the empty tomb and discern the
presence of the Risen Lord among us.
“This is the day the Lord has
made, let us rejoice and be glad.”
Psalm 118

Questions people ask
Q. Why isn’t there a set date for Easter
as for Christmas? Wouldn’t it be much more
practical for arranging school terms, holidays,
etc.?
A. We celebrate
Easter on the first Sunday after the first full
moon after the Spring Equinox, that is, 21st March.
This ancient tradition developed from the Jewish
Passover. By taking account of the cycle of the
sun and the phase of the moon, the resurrection
is connected to the entire universe. It points
to the exalted position of Jesus Christ, the Beginning
and the End, to whom all time belongs and all
creation. Having a set date for Easter might be
practical, but we need reminders that there is
more to life and religion than practical planning.
