Sunday 3rd August 2008

The 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Lord who feeds us

Jesus said to his disciples: “Give them something to eat yourselves.” These words of Jesus in this Sunday’s Gospel are a clear reminder that we, as his followers, have to develop a new mentality. Instead of always looking for what we can get we are called to be people who look for what we can give. All the gifts we have are given to us for others. This is especially true of the gift of love. The main question for couples is not “Are we alright?” but “How do we need to be with one another so that others will be alright?” The love of a married couple is full of power for all those who meet them. This is particularly true for their children. It is the quality of the love of the couple that creates the quality of the atmosphere of the home. This command of Christ is also given to us as a community. The gift of faith that we celebrate is given to us so that others may believe. This can call us to radical change as a parish community.

Things Are Not Always What They Seem

Two travelling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let the angels stay in the mansion’s guest room. Instead the angels were given a small space in the cold basement. As they made their bed on the hard floor, the older angel saw a hole in the wall and repaired it. When the younger angel asked why, the older angel replied, “Things aren’t always what they seem.” The next night the pair came to rest at the house of a very poor, but very hospitable farmer and his wife. After sharing what little food they had the couple let the angels sleep in their bed where they could have a good night’s rest. When the sun came up the next morning the angels found the farmer and his wife in tears. Their only cow, whose milk had been their sole income, lay dead in the field. The younger angel was infuriated and asked the older angel how could you have let this happen? The first man had everything, yet you helped him, she accused. The second family had little but was willing to share everything, and you let the cow die.

“Things aren’t always what they seem,” the older angel replied. “When we stayed in the basement of the mansion, I noticed there was gold stored in that hole in the wall. Since the owner was so obsessed with greed and unwilling to share his good fortune, I sealed the wall so he wouldn’t find it.”

“Then last night as we slept in the farmer’s bed, the angel of death came for his wife. I gave him the cow instead. Things aren’t always what they seem.”

Sometimes that is exactly what happens when things don’t turn out the way they should. If you have faith, you just need to trust that every outcome is always to your advantage. You might not know it until some time later… Anonymous

Words of Wisdom
“What you are is God’s gift to you.
What you do is your gift to God”

Q. Could heaven be boring? Eternal life, going on and on with no end doesn’t appeal to me at all.

A. Try thinking of eternity not in terms of time but as a total experience of love, joy,

celebration etc. We get little glimpses of the eternal in moments of beauty when we would like the clock stop right here. Jesus promised: I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you (John 16:22). St Paul wrote that no eye has seen, no ear has heard and no imagination has managed to visualise all that God has prepared for those who love him. That doesn’t sound like the recipe for boredom!

Clonmacnoise Summer Youth Festival

14th – 17th August 2008

This is a festival for young people, aged 16 – 35. The weekend will include inspiring talks, dramas, a concert, prayer, Mass, games and times of sharing. This year we are very excited to have it beside the monastic ruins of Clonmacnoise, particularly because Pope John Paul II requested “pilgrimages of faith” there after his visit in 1979. It promises to be a great opportunity for young people from all around Ireland to explore their Catholic faith, meet new friends and have some craic! This is a donation-only retreat. Free buses are available throughout the country – just bring a sleeping bag and a pair of wellies! (Over 18s may like to bring their own tent). For more information contact 003531-6753690 or log onto www.youth2000.ie or xx-youth2000-xx.bebo.com.
