The Parish Notes

The Pope’s Intentions for April
General: That, allowing himself to be enlightened and guided by the Holy Spirit, every Christian may answer enthusiastically and faithfully to the universal call to sanctity.
Missionary: That the number of priestly and religious vocations may grow in North America and the countries of the Pacific Ocean, in order to give an adequate answer to the pastoral and missionary needs of those populations.

Another Angle - Living life with a goal
Early travellers journeyed by the stars, in a sense they still do with Satellite Navigation (SatNav) technology. But mistakes are still possible. One hapless ambulance crew on a routine 8 mile journey with a patient realised several hours and 200 miles later that their SatNav had unerringly brought them to a hospital of the same name but in a different city.

With far less high tech, this Passion Sunday finds Jesus and his companions reach unerringly the goal of His journey – Jerusalem. It was the goal of his journey. Nothing would deter him from it, several times we are told ‘his face was set for Jerusalem.’

Jesus knew what he was about, but do we? Are we meandering around in life or have we a goal and a purpose. One writer says it can be done, based on S.E.C.R.E.T.S. (1) Sense of purpose – write down your goals in life (2) Excellence – strive for the best (3)Contribution – give it your best (4) Responsibility- take responsibility for your actions (5) Effort – it takes work (6) Time – manage it, as it’s precious (7) Stick with it.

Holy Week shows us in all the experiences of His life; triumph, leave-taking, betrayal, abandonment, helplessness and simply waiting that He has mapped the road out for us. Even seeming dead-ends like death are now just another stop on the road to glory. No SatNav needed.

Questions people ask
Q. How could a loving God, in anger, demand that Jesus should undergo the sufferings of his passion?
A. That notion of a punishing God is dreadful. John’s Gospel sees the passion as a consequence of the total love of Jesus for us sinners. ‘Having loved those who were his in the world, he loved them to the end.’ He didn’t love from a safe distance but he freely united himself with all who endure physical, emotional and spiritual suffering. Having talked the talk, Jesus also walked the walk. The cross is an expression of free and total love. And it is a sign of hope because it was the door into the new life of resurrection.

Words of Wisdom…..
God does not make decisions the way we do. People judge by outward appearance, but the God looks at a person's thoughts and intentions.

Don’t Judge people by outward appearance, as God does not make decisions this way. God looks at a person’s thoughts and intentions.

Precious Life
There is an appeal of extreme urgency being made to you today. Northern Ireland is facing the real and frightening prospect of abortion being legalised ‘through he back door’ by the Department of Health.

In response to this terrible threat, Precious Life have launched the ‘Not In My Name’ campaign. Representatives will be standing at he doors of the Church after this Mass with Information leaflets warning of the danger. There is a submission form attached for you to sign and send to Precious Life, or if you have time to sign it now it will be sent for you. Precious Life will present these to the Northern Ireland Health Minister on 20th April. We hope and pray this campaign will force the Department of Health to change their guidelines and give protection to our unborn children and their mothers.
